Introduction[edit | edit source]

Altemuller's Gate of Fate missions explore the various tragic moments of his past as well as his own failures in the canon Langrisser timeline. These include:

  • The death of his lover, Varna
  • His inability to arrive in time to save the life of his valued subordinate, Bortz
  • His failure to notice the poisoning of his Emperor, Heinrich Kleist IV, until it was too late

He resolves to relive each and every painful memory that played a part in him choosing to unseal Alhazard and become Chaos' avatar, Bozel, finally confronting his demons in the process.

Scenarios[edit | edit source]

Scenario 1: Ending[edit | edit source]

Plot:[edit | edit source]

In this first scenario, Altemuller is shown an alternate fate of his in which he successfully returns from the war and meets with Emerick, a General of the Riguler Empire, and Varna, another General and his lover. Then a large number of demons appear and threaten to kill the Grand Marshal. He chooses to stand his ground and fight to the death, despite overwhelming odds. Part way through the fight, Matthew, Almeda and Grenier appear on the field, revealing that this is just an illusion. The three young heroes fight alongside Altemuller, protecting him while Jessica dispels the illusion spell. Once this is done, Bozel announces that Altemuller's "sorrowful fate" still awaits him.

Once safely escaped from the dream, Altemuller enquires about Bozel's final statement. Jessica explains that people's fates are not fixed. In one timeline, he was able to save Varna and return home as a legend. However in the other he becomes Bozel and welcomes his own destruction. After being pressed for an answer, Jessica conveys that the Altemuller among them follows the latter path.

Guidance:[edit | edit source]

Altemuller's starting position is in the center of the map at the bottom of the corridor. There are a total of 7 enemy units on the map: 2 Skeleton Masters, 2 Skeleton Archers, 2 Orc Berserker Generals and Bozel. At the start of turn 4, three allied units (Matthew, Almeda and Grenier) will appear at the top of the corridor.

Unless already at a moderate level and equipped with passable gear, a lone Altemuller may struggle against the sheer number of foes on this map, particularly if his lancer class tree was taken as there are 2 infantry units to deal with. In this case, it is vital to take on only a couple of enemies at a time and attempt to kite back up the corridor to where your reinforcements will spawn. It is sufficient to survive for 7 turns in order to clear this map. One does not have to rout the enemy entirely. Almeda can deal a large amount of damage to most of the enemy units and is a source of healing. Matthew is the only one of the reinforcements that can effectively combat the orcs if Altemuller is not able to.

Feats:[edit | edit source]

Victory: No allied units are defeated. (Reward: 16000 Gold)

Exterminate: Kill all enemy units, including Bozel. (Reward: 20 Trinity Crystals)

Scenario 2: Nameless Grief[edit | edit source]

Plot:[edit | edit source]

Altemuller has been told that he must eliminate the hatred festering inside of himself in order to avert his damnable fate since this is the catalyst that will drive him down the path of ruin. Altemuller laments his lack of memories since being summoned into the present era. Matthew proposes using Langrisser to peer into the Marshal's past to find the sources of hatred. Altemuller agrees to this course of action, telling the others not to concern themselves with his own feelings.

Altemuller and Matthew then enter the first of many memories, a recollection of Langrisser III's Scenario 19. Bortz and his men are cornered by enemy forces, though Matthew recognises that what should be the forces of Larcuss lead by Dieharte in fact appear as demons in the memory. Altemuller and his allies proceed to rush to Bortz's aid whilst demonic forces continuously flood in to attack Bortz and a portion of his men who have stayed behind to cover the retreat of the others to the skyboat.

Despite his best efforts, Altemuller was not able to reach Bortz in time and he was forced to sacrifice himself so that a majority of the forces under his command were able to escape with their lives. The Marshal takes a moment to remember his fallen subordinate, describing him as "loyal", "brave" and steadfast, noting the fraternal relationship he shared with his men. Altemuller reaches the conclusion that, unlike Bortz, he failed a subordinate and friend in their time of need which lead them to perish. He realises that he had internalised his emotional response to Bortz's death in an effort to present a strong and unwavering persona to the remaining men under his command. As a result, he had never made peace with the event in the past. However the ability to relive the moment with the help of Langrisser allowed him the opportunity to say what needed to be said, finally allowing Altemuller to let go of the hatred he felt towards those who were responsible for Bortz's death and, more importantly, some of his own self-loathing for his perceived part he played in the way events unfolded.
